A little over a year ago, ChatGPT took the tech industry by storm. For the first time, generative AI was accessible to the general public, and it wasn’t a simple futuristic concept; it was real, and anyone could use it to generate text of any kind.

A few weeks later, AI systems capable of generating images, such as Dall-E and Midjourney, proved that the industry and Internet users were not ready for such capabilities. Now, we have just seen a similar, or even greater, leap forward with the introduction of Sora .

Sora is the new AI from OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT and Dall-E and led by one of the most controversial figures in the industry, Sam Altman. Described by some as a visionary genius, Altman has left behind his fear of AI and has rushed to develop new multimedia models capable of generating all kinds of content through text, images, and video.

The result of this bet is Sora . This is not the first AI capable of generating videos, far from it; but it is undoubtedly the most advanced. The difference compared to other video-generating projects is enormous; comparing videos generated by the two AIs is like comparing PlayStation graphics like those on the PlayStation 5.

Prompt: An elegant woman walks down a Tokyo street with bright neon lights and animated city signs. She is wearing a leather jacket, a long red dress, black shoes, and is carrying a black bag. She is wearing sunglasses and red lipstick. She walks confidently and casually. The street is humid and reflective, creating a mirror effect of the colorful lights, and around her are many pedestrians walking.

Videos shared by OpenAI show how the model is able to generate videos from text in different styles and “orientations”—realistic creations that look like videos recorded with a camera in real locations.

Currently, Sora is not available to the public, and cannot be used even if you have a subscription to OpenAI services. Only a limited number of people working at OpenAI can access it. The company also confirmed that it will be available to several “artists, designers, and filmmakers” to give their feedback before it is released to the public.
