Do it now and without hesitation if you have a computer with an AMD processor: it will make it faster.
If you're thinking of upgrading your PC, you'll likely be looking for a new processor that's more suited to your needs, especially if you want to play games. But it's best to read this before making that investment, because you may not need it if you already have a relatively new AMD processor.
Starting today, Windows 11 users can now install an update that improves the performance of AMD processors — and best of all, we don't have to pay a cent to implement this improvement.
Ironically, the improvement comes after much controversy. It all started when the first benchmarks for the new generation of Ryzen processors were published; expectations were sky-high, with AMD promising that the new models were 16% faster than the previous generation, and that the Ryzen 9950X would be the most powerful new processor in the world. Some of the promises didn’t materialize when the first independent benchmarks were published and the improvement was found to be minimal; sometimes the new processors were worse than their predecessors.
After investigating, AMD found that Windows 11 was the culprit; specifically, Windows 11 wasn’t taking advantage of AMD processor cores the way it did Intel processors, for example.
Initially, the fix for this issue was going to be implemented in the next major update for Windows 11, 24H2; but fortunately, the decision was made to introduce this patch and release it directly to all users of the latest version of Windows 11, 23H2.
Tests with the new patch don't lie: the performance improvement is impressive. With the updated system, Hardware Unboxed has verified improvements of up to 35% in some games, meaning that the new processors not only meet AMD's promises, but in some cases even exceed them.
But the best news is that older AMD processors also benefit from these improvements; tests on Ryzen 7000 processors have shown improvements of up to 11% in some games. There’s even talk that some Intel processors could, in theory, benefit from the patch as well, though that’s yet to be proven.
To install the new patch that improves the performance of Windows 11, we have to click on the Start menu and enter Settings. On the left side, we enter "Windows Update", and click on "Check for updates"; although it is very possible that the program already shows a message stating that the update is available. Specifically, we are talking about installing the update KB5041587 that is gradually reaching all users.
