There is a new recovery tool from Microsoft to help with CrowdStrike issues. To assist IT administrators, the revised recovery tool offers two repair alternatives.

Following the global computer breakdown caused by a botched CrowdStrike upgrade on Friday, Microsoft has released an updated recovery tool to assist in restoring the remaining systems to service.  On Saturday, July 20, Microsoft released a support note outlining the new recovery tool.

Based on input from users, Microsoft has since added further functionality. Two methods are now available with the new recovery tool to restore an impacted machine and remove the problematic CrowdStrike update: Recover from WinPE and Recover from safe mode.

Administrator credentials are not required to recover the system when using the Recover from WinPE option. If BitLocker is installed, on the other hand, the person applying the fix will have to enter the BitLocker recovery key in order to get access to the system and fix it.

After the BitLocker password has been entered, the system should be able to reboot correctly since the Windows PE environment can be booted via USB and the CrowdStrike update can be automatically removed.

Without a BitLocker password, the Recover from safe mode option allows the system to function normally by immediately erasing the problematic CrowdStrike file so the computer may reboot.

However, the person doing the recovery will need administrator permissions.  There are now more choices available for Windows Virtual Machines hosted on Azure.  Following the CrowdStrike upgrade, Microsoft's help site offers tips for fixing Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers if you are still having problems.
