Linux Mint 22 “Wilma” is officially released and here are the new features

Final version of Linux Mint 22 "Wilma" distribution arrives with Cinnamon 6.2 desktop environment as default and brings kernel 6.8

If you are looking for a different operating system to test or use, you should know that Linux Mint 22 “Wilma” has been officially released. The version of the Linux distribution is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and features the Cinnamon 6.2 desktop environment.

Linux Mint 22 supports several desktop environments, but Cinnamon 6.2 is the default. The new version doesn't have any major new features compared to the previous ones, but it stands out for offering a set of small improvements.

More customizable Cinnamon

Among them is the Nemo window manager, which now features a highly customizable layout editor. With it, the user has several configuration options to order icons, adjust dividers and group actions, for example.

You can also trigger an applet that appears from the bottom right corner to perform various actions, such as showing or switching between workspaces.

Other features of Cinnamon 6.2 include a user applet with profile picture support, a power applet that promises to be more accurate in displaying battery status, increased support for configurable keyboard shortcuts, and of course, bug fixes.

For those who don't like Cinnamon, Linux Mint 22 also has official versions based on Xfce and Mate.

Linux Kernel 6.8

Linux Mint 22 comes with kernel 6.8 by default. This version was announced in March 2024 and brings, among its many features, support for graphics drivers for Raspberry Pi 5, as well as improved compatibility with Intel and AMD GPUs.

Since the distribution is based on Ubuntu 24.04 , an LTS (long-term support) release, Linux Mint 22 will receive updates until at least 2029. This includes not only security updates, but also kernel updates every six months during that period.

Other news

The new version of the distribution brings several small new features. Among the most notable are:

PipeWire as default audio server for lower latency and compatibility with more devices;
Unused language packs that are removed after installation to reduce storage space occupied;
Applications such as Celluloid, Simple Scan and System Monitor (among others) that have been downgraded (moved to previous versions) to improve their integration with this version of the distribution;
New set of images for wallpaper;
Updated themes to support GTK 4 UI development kit.

How to Download Linux Mint 22

The new version of the Linux distribution requires a computer with at least 2 GB of RAM (but 4 GB or more is recommended) and 20 GB of storage space (100 GB or more is recommended), as well as a screen with a resolution of 1024×768 pixels.

Linux Mint 22 “Wilma” can be downloaded from the official website . The link allows you to download versions with Cinnamon (2.7 GB image), Xfce (2.7 GB) and Mate (2.9 GB).

Those who have version 21.3 of the distribution already installed can wait for the automatic update or anticipate the procedure via the command sudo apt install mintupgrade .
