GTA 6 development will not be affected by SAG-AFTRA strike
Informed sources have confirmed that the development of the long-awaited GTA 6 will not be affected by the recent strike by the SAG-AFTRA union against major gaming companies due to its concerns about the use of artificial intelligence to replace voice actors.
GTA 6 development continues despite strike
A spokesperson for the publishers involved in the negotiations confirmed to Kotaku that GTA 6 is “exempt” from the strike, and an official statement on the SAG-AFTRA website says that union members can “work on the game and will not be penalized for doing so.”
Given that GTA 6 on PS5 is scheduled for a fall 2025 release, Rockstar will likely still need voice actors to record voices and make adjustments, and keeping these actors available during the strike means it won't impact any potential delays. There have been rumors of the game launching in 2026 in case work is delayed, but this option was considered an emergency option.
Reasons for the SAG-AFTRA strike
SAG-AFTRA union members strike in protest over use of AI in gaming industry Negotiations with some of the biggest publishers have failed to reach an agreement after more than 18 months of discussions, leading to the strike.
“The Interactive Media Agreement has been a great success,” said Oidre Collinge, spokesperson for the agreement.
We are disappointed that the union has chosen to withdraw just when we were so close to reaching an agreement, and we remain prepared to resume negotiations. We have already reached common ground on 24 of the 25 proposals, including historic wage increases and additional safety measures. Our proposal directly addresses SAG-AFTRA’s concerns and extends strong AI protections that include obtaining consent and fair compensation for all actors working under the Interactive Media Agreement. These terms are among the strongest in the entertainment industry.
