WhatsApp is testing new Instagram-inspired channel features

WhatsApp is currently testing several new changes to its Channels section, as seen in the latest beta versions of the app. One notable update is the ability to share posts from within channels as an in-app status, with a new UI for this functionality. The app will display shared posts within a specific frame, displaying the name of the channel the post was posted from, as well as a button to directly access the channel.

These new changes bear a striking resemblance to Instagram , also owned by Meta , which displays a similar interface when sharing posts as statuses. These changes aim to bridge the gap between the various Meta-owned platforms by unifying the user experience.

WhatsApp is also testing features like polls and automatically grouping photos posted within channels into an album. This feature is intended to make it easier to review photos in channels, similar to the experience in individual and group chats.

Earlier this year, WhatsApp globally launched the Channels feature, allowing users to share content with a wider audience. Users can interact with posts using emojis without revealing their identities. According to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, the Channels feature on WhatsApp surpassed 500 million monthly active users by the end of November.

There are reports that Meta is planning to introduce ads to WhatsApp in the future, specifically in the updates section where statuses and channel updates appear.
