What Is AT&T Internet?

AT&T is the world's largest telecommunications business as well as the world's third-largest internet service provider (ISP). The company provides broadband internet with a hybrid fibre and fiber-optic network. It has 15.4 million members in the United States as of 2020.

The company presently provides internet service in 21 states, with access in over 100 metro regions, the most of which are in the South and Midwest, but also California and Nevada. 14 million of AT&T's almost 53 million customers have access to the company's fibre network. The new 2 Gig and 5 Gig plans are available to 5.2 million AT&T subscribers as of January 2024.

The corporation commenced phased-out DSL (digital subscriber line) service in 2020. DSL is an older type of internet connection that connects to the internet via telephone wires and other equipment. AT&T has announced plans to expand its fiber internet service to 3 million additional homes in 90 major metropolitan areas.

SBC – one of the regional telecom corporations formed out of the historical AT&T after its court-ordered breakup in 1984 – bought enough portions of the original conglomerate to give it the AT&T moniker. AT&T also owns the DIRECTV satellite television service and acquired Time Warner in 2018.

What Is Spectrum?

Charter Communications, based in Stamford, Connecticut, bought Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks in 2016 and launched the Spectrum consumer brand. Spectrum became the second-largest internet provider in the United States as a result of the acquisition. Spectrum will serve 28 million residential internet subscribers in 41 states by 2024.

Almost percent of Spectrum's customers use its cable network, which, like other cable providers, provides rapid downloads but poor uploads. Spectrum, unlike many other ISPs, does not have a data cap. As part of its 2016 acquisition, the Federal Communications Commission ordered Spectrum to rule out data limitations by the end of 2023, and it now claims it has no intentions to do so.

Spectrum's cable network also offers TV and home phone service, but many of its customers choose not to use such services. It had about 15 million residential video users as of 2024. On the Verizon Wireless network, Spectrum also provides mobile phone service.

What Is Viasat?

High-speed satellite internet service is provided by Viasat Internet (previously Exede). This sort of internet service, notably fibre optic or cable internet, isn't as fast or dependable as others due to the enormous distances that data must travel. The primary advantage of satellite-based internet, on the other hand, is that it's generally available, especially outside of urban areas. Viasat's internet service is available in all 50 states and reaches 98 percent of the population of the United States.

Viasat, which has been in business for more than 30 years, provides internet services to both consumers and government institutions. Viasat also offers home phone service and, through a collaboration with DirecTV, television service. Viasat is ranked No. 2 in our Best Satellite ISPs of 2024, and No. 12 in our Best Internet Providers of 2024.
