  • Why is WhatsApp restricting older devices?
Older devices often lose support from tech companies.

In order to make older Android phones use Gmail, YouTube, and Google Maps , Google did just that.

Sometimes, this is because maintaining apps for very old iOS or Android versions is not cost-effective.

This is especially true if only a small portion of users still use these older software versions.

It is imperative that you update or upgrade the software if you cannot, as doing so may pose a serious security risk.

In 2022, the following countries have banned WhatsApp. Learn how to bypass the ban.

The following countries restrict the use of WhatsApp within their borders:

    • China

    • north korea

    • Syria

    • United Arab Emirates (UAE)

    • The State of Qatar

It is important to note that text messages and voice calls via WhatsApp are still allowed in the UAE, but voice and video calls are not.

Additionally, some countries have temporarily disabled WhatsApp. Brazil, Cuba, Iran, and Venezuela are among the countries that have increased internet restrictions to block WhatsApp and other social media apps during gatherings.

Why is WhatsApp blocked in some countries?

Because of the app’s end-to-end encryption, which allows users to communicate privately, WhatsApp has been banned in several countries. According to local officials, restricting the app is necessary to maintain a safe and stable political environment. In practice, political dissent is often suppressed using this form of control.

In order to support their telecom industry, other countries have imposed a ban on WhatsApp. On average, this move is expected to increase government revenue over time.

Can WhatsApp be used in China?
WhatsApp is blocked by the Chinese government, which effectively controls all internet services in the country. Since 1998, any app deemed incompatible by the Chinese government has been blocked by the Great Firewall of China. September 2017 saw WhatsApp’s setback.

Why is WhatsApp banned in China?

At first, onlookers thought the app’s temporary suspension was due to a Chinese Communist Party conference in October. But the ban has yet to be lifted. Check out our tips on how to use WhatsApp outside China.

Because of the app’s end-to-end encryption, which prevents them from reading messages exchanged over it, Chinese officials decided to ban it. To put things in perspective, the Chinese government actually allows Skype, a messaging app similar to WhatsApp, because it lacks such encryption.

What's new in Dubai's WhatsApp ban?

WhatsApp voice and video calls are blocked in Dubai, along with many Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services, for two main reasons.

First, the UAE government fears that terrorists and extremist organizations could use WhatsApp’s encryption. Second, Dubai is determined to prevent local telecom providers from incurring financial losses as a result of users using the free messaging apps. To learn how to bypass the WhatsApp ban in Dubai, read our tutorial.

    In Iran, is WhatsApp blocked?

While the app is not currently banned in Iran, it was during protests and other turbulent times. One of the main threats to WhatsApp is the Iranian government’s desire to create a “national internet” with its own search engine and internal messaging apps.

    In Brazil, is WhatsApp blocked?

In Brazil, WhatsApp is not blocked, but there have been a number of restrictions in the past. The most recent was the 2020 suspension of WhatsApp's payment function by the Central Bank of Brazil, which was reinstated in 2021.

It's impossible to predict whether Brazil will ban WhatsApp, but given that Brazil's National Congress is debating laws that would make messages traceable, there appears to be no immediate sign of a ceasefire.

    In India, is WhatsApp banned?

India has over 480 million WhatsApp users, making it WhatsApp’s largest market. There has been a privacy dispute between WhatsApp and the Indian government, but there are no immediate signs of a ban.

Is WhatsApp banned in the UK?

With over 40 million users, WhatsApp is prospering in the United Kingdom. As of now, WhatsApp's decision to raise the minimum age to use the app from 13 to 16 in compliance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation is the closest thing to a restriction (GDPR). It's doubtful that the app will be outright banned.
