Chrome Canary brings new features to Android

Chrome Canary

Chrome Canary! Google has turned Chrome for Android into a versatile  browser , setting the standard for other popular  browser apps based on the Chromium project. It still has some things missing, but it performs remarkably well with cross-device syncing, a smooth interface, and tab management features like tab grouping. Developers have been getting a look at tab group sharing in Chrome Canary for a while now, and the latest iteration reveals that Google hasn’t forgotten about the feature yet.

Feature availability on Chrome and Chrome Canary

Back in January, we reported on browser researcher @Leopeva64 on X (formerly Twitter) about a new option to invite people to share and use the tab groups you create in Chrome for Android. The feature doesn’t seem like a huge development, but it could be a great alternative to a ton of links in an email or chat message when you want to share your product research with other people, or want to discuss interior design ideas with your partner. The potential uses are endless.

The feature should eventually be available on both desktop and mobile but since then, the researcher has discovered that invitations to collaborate in tab groups automatically expire after 48 hours. Those who accept and join can edit all tabs within that group. Chrome also gives you the option to stop sharing at your own will.

It’s been months since the first appearance, but Leopeva spotted the feature in Chrome Canary for Android again this week. The latest build ditches the invite label in favor of a more familiar sharing option, and puts the button more prominently in the tab group card toolbar.

That should help with visibility, but it’s still not working.
Interestingly, tab group sharing is still controlled by a flag in Chrome, and Leopeva says he’s seeing the same flag for sharing data on the Surface release as well as Chrome Canary for Android. That’s enough evidence to suggest the feature will roll out to both operating systems, but when that will happen is still unclear.
