Introduction
The Samsung Unpacked event did not include the Galaxy S23 series unveiling for Android phones only. Along with the Galaxy S23, S23 Plus, and S23 Ultra, Samsung has highlighted high-end new laptops, including the Galaxy Book 3 Pro I'm looking at here.
The Galaxy Book 3 Pro sits next to the Galaxy Book 3 Pro 360 and below the Galaxy Book 3 Ultra in Samsung's most enticing laptop in years.
I've spent just over an hour with the three Galaxy Book 3 models unveiled in Unpacked before launch at an event organized by Samsung, and here are my initial thoughts on the Pro model.
Screen & Design
Two size options: 14 and 16 inches
The 14-inch model feels the perfect size
No touch option for AMOLED display
Having spent a lot of time with the modern 14-inch MacBook Pro M2, size has become my personal choice and I'm glad to see Samsung offer it here, along with a larger 16-inch position.
The 14-inch provides enough space for creative tasks, yet it comes in a still portable body. For the Book 3 Pro, the 14-inch model weighs 1.17 kg (noticeably lighter than the 14-inch MacBook Pro) and measures 11.3 mm. This makes it very light and slim. For a 16-inch screen, the weight rises to 1.56 kg, while its thickness is 12.5 mm.
Both models have great displays, even if you want to use the 360 version if it's the touchscreen and the S-Pen connection you're looking for. Dynamic AMOLED 2x panels look like they have great color reproduction, the grainy black you'd expect from OLED and plenty of brightness.
Both sizes have a resolution of 2880 × 1800 (or 3K), a 120Hz refresh rate for smooth motion and a 16:10 aspect ratio that adds more portrait than traditional 16:9 displays. Overall, the screen here looks great.
The design is less prominent, although far from being ugly. It lacks many interesting decorations or design elements to help it catch the eye. It is finished to a high standard and comes in white or dark gray.
Specifications & Performance
Choice of Intel i5 or i7 chips (28W)
Intel Xe graphics
Tight integration with Samsung phones
The Samsung Galaxy Book 3 Pro lacks the dedicated Nvidia graphics or 45W CPUs you'll find in the Ultra model. Instead, the interiors are more modest – it's a choice between Intel 13th Gen i5 or i7 28w and integrated Intel Xe graphics.
You'll find a 1080p webcam for video calls and a good selection of ports, including HDMI, 3x USB-C, and a USB-A port for older accessories. There's a Micro SD slot too, which is as welcome if not as welcome as a full-size SD card slot. Charging is via USB-C port.
During the hardware demo, Samsung played a lot of the integration skills that Windows laptops have with Samsung's broader ecosystem. You can quickly connect to a Samsung phone to use its data connection as a wireless hotspot, for example, or extend your laptop screen via a tablet.
One nice demo highlighted by Samsung was the Adobe integration, where an image directly from the phone's Pro Raw app was shared directly to Lightroom for editing.
Early judgment
While the Samsung Galaxy Book Ultra is the real technology featured in the new book collection, it was immediately attracted to the 14-inch version of the Galaxy Book Pro. The size is pretty ideal, giving you a screen large enough for productivity tasks and media consumption in a portable chassis.
It makes this package even more tempting that the OLED display is great and that Samsung's powerful software suite ensures tight integration with Galaxy phones.
