Trump appoints Elon Musk as head of the Government Efficiency Department (DOGE). What does that mean?

President-elect Donald Trump recently announced that Elon Musk will assume the role of co-leader of a new advisory body, the Government Efficiency Administration (DOGE), which, referring to the cryptocurrency world, refers to Dogecoin, the billionaire's favorite cryptocurrency.

Musk, CEO of Tesla, SpaceX and Neuralink and owner of social network X (formerly Twitter), will share that responsibility with biotech entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. Together, they will lead efforts to reduce bureaucracy, eliminate unnecessary regulations, and reorganize federal agencies in the Trump administration.

Although the name suggests an official department, DOGE will not be a traditional government agency. Instead, this body will operate as a team of external advisers, without the need for legislative approval or direct funding from Congress. DOGE's mission will be to work collaboratively with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to identify and recommend federal spending cuts and streamline bureaucratic processes.

Musk has already mentioned the idea of creating a government efficiency department at several Trump campaign events, with promises to set up to $2 trillion in cuts within federal agencies. However, it has not yet been clarified which specific departments or programs will be most affected by these amendments.

At an event in New York last October, Musk reiterated that his goal is to eliminate spending he considers excessive, suggesting that the government must operate more efficiently and with a "business-conscious" approach. However, details of how and where these reductions will be achieved remain unknown.

The relationship between Trump and Musk has been in the news consistently in recent months. Musk has shown support for Trump's candidacy, including donating more than $100 million to the pro-Trump Political Action Committee, as well as appearing alongside him at numerous events and forums. This mutual support crystallized in September, when, during an appearance at the Economic Club in New York, Trump promised Musk would lead DOGE if elected.

- What can we expect from DOGE's work?

DOGE has a specific timeframe for its work, with an expected expiration date no later than July 4, 2026. This suggests that her work will focus on producing rapid changes, with clear goals and a strict timeline. The initial priority will be to identify regulatory and spending cuts, something Musk has advocated on several occasions, referring to the need to eliminate redundant processes to make government "more flexible and less costly."

DOGE's proposal comes at a time when efficiency and austerity have become major themes in political discourse. However, the question many ask is whether an external advisory group led by business figures can bring about a real shift in government bureaucracy. Will Musk be able to apply his work approach in a complex and structured environment like the federal government?
