Users usually interact with the Apple Watch using touchscreen gestures. This is a fact that very few people know that they can operate the watch in hands-free mode as well. This feature comes as a lifesaver when you want to turn on your Apple Watch but you can't turn it on with touch.
Apple has included assistive touch in the Apple Watch SE or a later series. This feature allows you to turn on your Apple Watch by gestures. In addition, assistive touch can be customized to a certain limit and you can include additional gestures to navigate the watch.
In this article, we explained everything you need to know about Assistive Touch in Apple Watch and how you can take advantage of it to use your Apple Watch in hands-free mode. If you are interested in learning more about it, stay with us throughout this article.
What is Assistive Touch and its functions?
Assistive Touch is a thoughtful feature of the Apple Watch that comes in handy when you want to interact with your Apple Watch without physically touching it. This feature takes advantage of gyroscope technology and accelerometer to sense wrist gestures. These gestures help you navigate and interact with the wearable.
As mentioned earlier, Assistive Touch is only part of the Apple Watch SE, Series 6 and above.
If you own a watch that belongs to this series, keep reading below to learn how to set up the Assistive Touch feature to use the Apple Watch hands-free.
Set up Assistive Touch on your Apple Watch
Apple has given you the freedom to set up Assistive Touch from both Apple Watch and paired iPhone. The process of enabling assistive touch on both devices is almost the same.
Here are the exact steps to enable Assistive Touch on your Apple Watch:
First of all, press the Digital Crown button on the side to access the Apple Watch home screen.
Now find the settings icon in the app grid or menu and click to access the watch settings.
After that, scroll Settings until you find the "Accessibility" option and then click on it.
Keep scrolling through the accessibility settings until you reach the "Engine" section.
After that, click on the Assistive Touch option located here.
On the next page, turn its switch on to the On position.
Now keep scrolling until you reach the input settings and tap on the "Hand Gestures" option now.
Now find the switch next to the Hand Gestures option and move it to one position.
Once you do that, the Assistive Touch feature will be enabled and you will be able to use your Apple Watch hands-free as you will be able to feel your hand gestures now.
Use assistive touch gestures on Apple Watch
Now that the Assistive Touch feature is enabled, you should know the hand gestures that you can use to turn on your Apple Watch. Here, we present the list of hand gestures provided by default by Apple:
Disk: Move focus to the next option in the grid/menu visible on the screen.
Dual Dial: Move focus to the previous option in the grid/menu visible on the screen.
Clench: Perform the tap action.
Double-Clench: Access the action menu. The Actions menu contains the list of actions you can perform in handsfree mode when you select an option. (Example: swipe right/left, press the home button, rotate the crown, and more.)
Note: The handsfree feature is not activated by default and you will have to activate it every time you intend to use it. The activation gesture of the assistive touch feature is a double tap on the watch screen.
When you enable the Assistive Touch feature, the Apple Watch screen will light up and a blue ring will appear on the screen. Now all you have to do is double tap the screen to call the assistive touch feature.
When the Assistive Touch feature is activated, you will feel haptic vibration on your wrist. A selection ring will also appear on the disc.
To access the various functions on the face of the connection, you will have to do the pinch gesture. This will get you to the next item on the watch. To access the previous option, make a double disc gesture.
Similarly, the double press process will take you back to the wearable device's home screen. You will be able to access the action menu on your watch screen.
To select an option on the screen, make one gesture.
