Apple Watch Ultra: How to customize the action button
Although the action button of the Apple Watch Ultra is just another control, it offers substantial improvements if you take the time to learn how to configure it and make the most of it.
The new Apple Watch model featuring a third control, the Digital Crown, was unveiled seven years after the first Apple Watch using only the digital crown and side button. The new action button is a huge orange button that packs a punch.
The new button aims to provide divers, extreme sports enthusiasts and athletes with a way to quickly access one of the watch's multiple functions, such as starting a workout. However, it can be used to start a shortcut, making it possible to start all the new features and anything else the watch can do with a single tap.
Introducing the second action button for Ultra
The new button was first featured in the latest Apple Watch Ultra leaks, along with life-size case models that showed major updates to the sides of the watch. Digital Crown and right-side buttons have been reimagined. The action button is located to the left of the side button.
The action buttons are designed so that they can be easily seen, which is why they are colored in international orange. This should indicate that the button is unique and requires some experience to use it properly. The bright orange color helps with vision.
At the Apple Watch Ultra announcement event, Apple stated that users can change the appearance of the action button. Pressing this button takes you directly to one of the most frequently used functions on the watch.
You can assign several actions to the Apple Watch Ultra work button, giving you quick access to your favorite apps and functions. You can configure app actions and features:
Discover - Solve
Stopwatch
Coordinate
Back off
Dive into
Flashlight
Shortcut
The behavior of the action button changes slightly depending on its primary function, and under each main function, additional customization options are available. Adjusting the action button to activate an item like a flashlight is simple but not customizable. By contrast, when the action button is programmed to start the exercise, other parameters can be adjusted, such as the type of activity, the goal, and the length of time.
Start over
When you set up Ultra, it will prompt you to assign an action to the action button. You can choose to immediately adhere to the on-screen instructions or return later to make changes. We will immediately begin to discuss the latter. Your use of the action button is likely to evolve when you find what suits you best. The good news is that the action button function can be adjusted in two places: on your watch and on your phone.
The action button can be customized in the following ways:
Turn on the Apple Watch settings menu. This can also be achieved through the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
Press the Action button.
Select the action you want the button to perform by clicking the Action menu.
You can return to the action button preferences by clicking the arrow in the upper left corner.
If you open the list of applications, click on it and choose the desired one from the list. For some commands, such as "flashlight", the list of applications is hidden.
To go back, simply click on the arrow.
If the first press menu opens, click on it. then choose an option. Some functions allow alternative results based on whether the button is pressed once or twice.
Look for the siren switch near the bottom of the page. If the switch is triggered, pressing and holding the action button for five seconds will open the emergency SOS menu, where you can sound the siren.
Please note that the exercise and dive actions involve additional application preparation, and it is assumed that you can install a third-party application. However, for now, the app options are limited to exercise and depth. In the not too distant future, this is likely to change.
Under Gestures, you'll find a contextual help that explains how to use the action button with current preferences.
For example, the walk-out instruction may explain that pressing the action button as soon as the exercise begins and pressing the action button and the side button pauses it at the same time.
Pressing again will show other alternatives.
Additional capabilities for the new Apple Watch Ultra are available to consumers depending on the app or function that the action button will control. Here, all it takes will be a few quick press of the buttons to reveal new options and improve the user experience.
Apple's use case is straightforward: the action button will get repeated clicks even when the user's eyes are away from the screen. To be able to squeeze it again makes sense in light of this. Triathlon observation is a great example of this (activity). Triathlon tracking is activated after the first click, and subsequent taps allow you to switch between different activities on which you want to follow the tabs.
