Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 are essentially the same. Windows 8.1 is just an improved version of Windows 8. It offers some better features like changing the default browser, Start button, hot corners, skipping Start at startup and more. We strongly recommend using Windows 8.1 instead of Windows 8 (if you prefer Win8).

Windows 8.1 is an improved version of Windows 8, the beginning of the modern desktop operating system by Microsoft.

Windows 8 was released after Windows 7 and before Windows 10. Microsoft has almost overhauled the operating system to make it a modern desktop operating system. Windows 8 has some serious flaws that have been heavily criticized by the public. So Microsoft released Windows 8.1 to fix these issues and introduced some new features.

Windows 8/8.1 was expected to become the best desktop operating system, but it was a failure! In fact. Despite years of efforts, Windows 8/8.1 has not been able to prove itself as a usable operating system (while Microsoft dreamed it would be great).

Windows 8.1 has its own features. Some users prefer Windows 8.1 over Windows 10 and Windows 7. This makes sense. Windows 8.1 has its own advantages and features that are not found in any other operating system.

Windows 8.1 features

Boot directly to the desktop

In Windows 8, Start is used as the first screen after the user signs in. Users had to tap the desktop tile from the Start screen. This was kind of a painful extra step. Fixed in 8.1 where the traditional desktop is the first screen after logging in.

Set default apps

Do you want to keep your old Internet Explorer browser as your default Internet browser? No one likes it (even Microsoft employees, unless they probably force). Windows 8.1 allows switching the default browser and other applications such as photo viewer, media player, etc.

Start button

No, it's not what you think. It's the same as the Windows 8 start button but with some improvements like right-click options and some other improvements. However, it doesn't bring up the Start menu like Windows 7 or Windows 10 etc.

If you ask us, the Start button and Start menu contributed more than 70% to the failure of Windows 8 / 8.1. Microsoft stuck to it unless the use of Windows 8 was completely destroyed.

Resize tiles

The size of the tile can be changed to small or medium. Large and wide sizes. Although it's not great, it was a useful feature to organize the splash screen.

Automatic app update

Windows metro apps can be set up to update automatically to the latest version. You can enable/disable the option to update apps automatically.
