How to Install Windows 10 on Your Mac for Free and Easily
Whatever the reason, you may need to use Windows instead of macOS sometimes. It could be because you want to play an exclusive game for Windows, or you're a developer who wants to test the software on both operating systems. Fortunately, you don't need to buy two computers to run Windows and Mac. Alternatively, you can do it all on one device.
If you have an Intel-based Mac with enough storage, and the correct Windows 10 ISO file – which you can download for free from the official Windows website – you can set up Windows 10 in less than an hour on your Apple computer. Anytime you turn on your Mac, you can choose whether to launch Windows or macOS. Here's how to do it.
Here's what you need before you start
To successfully run Windows 10 on your Mac computer, here's what you need:
- Your Mac computer is running Intel (if your computer is on this list, it is not supported).
- 64 GB or more of free storage on your startup disk.
- Power connection (if you are using a laptop).
If you are not sure if your computer is based on Intel, click the Apple logo in the menu bar, then go to About This Mac. If you see the words Processor, followed by the name of an Intel processor, such as "2.6GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7", it means you have an Intel-based Mac.
Before you begin, it is wise to back up a disk with Time Machine before partitioning in case something goes wrong.
1. Download the Windows 10 ISO file
Windows 11 is currently not compatible with Boot Camp Assistant on macOS. Therefore, you will need to download Windows 10 instead. You can download a free disk image, also known as an ISO file, for Windows 10 from the official Windows website.

The Windows 10 ISO file size is approximately 6 GB, so depending on your internet connection and speed, it can take up to 30 minutes to finish downloading. After the ISO file is done, leave it in your downloads, and proceed to the next step.
2. Launch the Boot Camp Assistant
The program that you will use to launch Windows 10 on your Mac is Boot Camp Assistant, which comes factory-installed on your Mac. Boot Camp Assistant is specially designed to install Windows operating systems on your computer, fortunately the setup process is very simple.
1 . Launch Boot Camp Assistant on your Mac, and click Continue.
2 . Click Choose Windows 10 ISO file, and upload the Windows 10 ISO file you downloaded in the previous step.
3 . Drag the bar to choose the size of the Windows partition disk (the minimum is 42 GB).
4 . Click Install, and wait for about 10 minutes for the partition to be created.
Once the Windows partition is done, the laptop will restart.
3. Install Windows on your Mac
Your computer will turn on, but instead of showing the Apple logo you're used to, you should see the blue Windows logo appear to you instead. Here's what you need to do next:
1 . Go through Windows Setup.
2 . Enter a product key if you have one. If not, you can proceed without one.
Even without the product key, you will be able to access Windows on your Mac, so don't worry if you don't have a key. During installation, you will see the copied windows files, features, installed updates, and more. This should take another 10 minutes.
4. Set up Windows on your Mac
Your Mac will restart. But this time you will be asked to set up Windows, just like you would on a Windows PC. You can use Cortana and your voice to complete the setup, but you can also use your keyboard, mouse, and trackpad.
1 . Choose your language, keyboard layout, Wi-Fi, and more to get started.
2 . If you have a Windows account, sign in with your credentials.
3 . Windows will boot on your Mac. You will be asked to generate a passcode and/or PIN to enter your computer. Do this to protect your account.
5. Install Boot Camp on Windows
Finally, the last thing you need to do is to install and update Boot Camp on Windows. This will allow you to make any additional changes to your partition or fix any issues while Windows is running. When you first access Windows, you should receive a notification to install Boot Camp. Installation will take 10 minutes, but it's the last thing you need to do before you can use Windows without any problems.
6. Use Windows on your Mac
Feel free to use Windows the way you want. The default web browser for Windows 10 is Microsoft Edge, but you can use it to download Chrome or something else to browse the Internet. You can then download the files and install programs that you will only be able to install on your Windows PC – such as Paint.NET and some games from Steam – but on your Mac.
7. Switch between Windows and Mac
If at any time you want to return to macOS from Windows, do the following:
1 . Restart your computer.
2 . Once the screen goes black, press and hold the Option key for 5 seconds.
3 . On the screen, you will then have the option to launch macOS or Windows .
4 . Choose the section you want to open.
