Apple is reportedly planning to upgrade the primary camera on the iPhone 18 with a variable aperture technology, which would be the first of its kind on an iPhone.

The iPhone 18 is expected to launch in 2026, and the Pro versions will be the first phones to receive this technology in the main rear camera, as they usually get new features before the basic versions of the iPhone.

It is worth noting that Samsung was the first company to introduce variable aperture technology in the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus phones in 2018, but it did not continue to use it in subsequent versions.

Apple is looking to revive the technology with the iPhone 18, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who also revealed the names of the primary and secondary suppliers of camera components.

Sunny Optical will be the primary supplier of the variable aperture lenses, while Luxshare will be the secondary supplier, Koo explained.

Sunny Optical is already a trusted supplier of lenses for Android devices, which enhances its ability to design and mass-produce variable aperture cameras.

In his latest remarks, Kuo also noted that TSMC will manufacture advanced 2nm processors for the iPhone 18, adding that Apple may start including at least 12GB of RAM in all its phones to ensure its AI features run smoothly.
