Fix Windows 10 Sleep Mode Not Working

You'll spend much more time looking at the blue-brick logo and startup graphics if they're not for Windows sleep mode. It keeps laptops and desktops running but in a low power state. It thus keeps apps and Windows active allowing you to get back to work immediately after taking a quick coffee break. Sleep mode usually works flawlessly on Windows 10, however, once in the blue moon, it can trigger a headache. In this article, we will walk you through the correct power settings for sleep mode and other fixes to resolve the problem of sleep mode not working in Windows 10.

How to Fix Windows 10 Sleep Mode Not Working

Sometimes, you may unknowingly disable the sleep mode feature and then think that it no longer works. Another very common problem is that Windows 10 fails to fall asleep automatically after a preset idle time. Most problems with sleep mode arise for the following reasons:

Misconfiguration of power settings
Interference from third-party applications.
Or outdated or corrupt drivers.
The computer can be put to sleep by selecting the desired option from the Windows Power menu while closing the lid of the laptop automatically puts it to sleep. In addition, Windows computers can be configured to automatically fall asleep after a specified idle period to save power. To wake the system from sleep and return to work, simply move the mouse or press any key on the keyboard.

First way

: Run the Power troubleshooter
If adjusting power settings manually is not yet productive, use the Power troubleshooter to solve this problem. The tool checks all power plan settings and system settings such as display and screen saver to optimize power usage and automatically reset them if necessary. Here's how to turn it on:

1. Press Windows + I keys at the same time to open Windows Settings.

2. Click Update and Security Settings, as shown.

3. Go to the Troubleshooting tab in the left pane.

4. Scroll down to the "Find and fix other problems" section in the right pane.

5. Select the Power troubleshooter and click the "Run troubleshooter" button, as highlighted shown.

6. Once the troubleshooter finishes running its scans and fixes, a list of all detected issues and their solutions will be displayed. Follow the on-screen instructions to apply the mentioned fixes.

Method 2:

Disable the screen saver
If you are still facing this issue, you will need to check the screen saver settings or disable them altogether. It may seem like a strange fix but many users have solved the power issues simply by turning off the beloved bubble screen saver and we recommend you do the same.

1. Open Windows Settings and click Personalization, as shown.

2. Go to the "Lock Screen" tab.

3. Scroll to the bottom and tap Screen Saver Settings in the left pane.

4. Click on the drop-down menu "Screen Saver" and choose "None as shown".

5. Click Apply> OK to save the changes and exit.

The third way:

Run the powercfg command
As mentioned earlier, third-party software and software can also cause sleep mode to not work in Windows 10 by sending power requests frequently. Fortunately, the powercfg command-line tool available in Windows 10 can be used to find out the exact cause and perform the necessary actions. Here's how to implement it:

1. Press the Windows key, type command prompt, and click Run as administrator button.

2. Type powercfg -requests and press the Enter key to execute it, as shown.

Here, you should read all fields None. If there are any active power requests listed, canceling the power request made by the application or driver will allow the computer to sleep without any problem.

3. To cancel the power request, execute the following command:

powercfg -requestsoverride <CALLER_TYPE> “<الاسم>” <REQUEST>

Note: Replace CALLER_TYPE as PROCESS, NAME as chrome.exe, and REQUEST to EXECUTION so the command powercfg -requestsoverride PROCESS "chrome.exe" EXECUTION will be as below screenshot shown.

Note: Execute powercfg /requestsoverride? For more details about the command and its parameters. Moreover. Some other useful powercfg commands are listed below:

powercfg -lastwake : This command reports what woke the system up or prevented it from falling asleep the last time.
powercfg -devicequery wake_armed: Displays the devices that activate the system.

Fourth method:

Modify sleep settings
First, let's make sure you let your computer sleep. Windows 10 allows users to customize the actions of the power button and also what happens when the laptop lid is closed. Some third-party apps and malware are known to cause power settings to be tampered with and modified without the user's knowledge. Sleep settings can also be changed by your sibling or co-worker. Here's how to check and/or modify sleep settings to fix sleep mode issue in Windows 10:

1. Press the Windows key, type Control Panel, and click the Open button.

2. Here, set View By> the large icons, and then click Power Options, as shown.

3. In the left pane, click on the "Choose what the power buttons do" option.

Note: On a few Windows 10 PCs, it may be displayed as Choose what the power button does.

4. Select the sleep action such as "Do nothing" when I press the sleep button option under both On battery and Plugged in, as shown below.

5. Click on the Save Changes button and close the window.

Fifth way:

Set the sleep timer
For most users, sleep mode issues occur because sleep timer values are set to a value that is too high or never. Let's dive into the power settings again and reset the sleep timer to its default values, as follows:

1. Launch Control Panel and open "Power Options" as described in the fourth method.

2. Click "Choose Time" to turn off the display option in the left pane, as shown.

3. Now, select Idle time as the option of "Never put the computer to sleep" option under both the "Battery Operation" and "Connected" section, as shown below.

Note: The default values are 30 minutes and 20 minutes for On battery and Plugged in respectively.

Method 6:

Disable fast startup
This solution mainly applies to older systems that do not support fast startup and fail to sleep. As the name suggests, Fast Startup is a Windows feature that speeds up the system boot process by saving a kernel image and loading drivers onto a hiberfil.sys file. While the feature seems useful, many argue otherwise. Read Why do you need to disable fast startup in Windows 10? Here and perform the specific steps:

1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options> choose what the power buttons do as shown in the fourth method .

2. Click Change currently unavailable settings to unlock the Shutdown Settings section.

NOTE: Click Yes at the User Account Control prompt.

3. Uncheck the Turn on quick startup option (recommended) option

4. Click the "Save Changes" button to activate the changes.

Note: Make sure the Sleep option is selected under Shutdown settings.

Way 7:

Disable hybrid sleep mode
Hybrid sleep is an energy state that most users are not aware of. Mode is a combination of two separate modes, namely hibernation and sleep mode. All of these modes basically put the computer into a power-saving state but have some subtle differences. For example: in sleep mode, programs are saved in memory during hibernation, and are stored on the hard drive. As a result, in hybrid sleep mode, active programs and documents are saved on both memory and hard drive.

Hybrid sleep mode is enabled by default on desktop computers, and whenever the desktop is put to sleep, it automatically enters hybrid sleep mode. Here's how to disable this feature to fix sleep mode not working in Windows 10:

1. Press the Windows key, type edit power plan, and press the Enter key .

2. Click on the option to change advanced power settings, as shown.

3. In the Power Options window, click the + icon next to Sleep to expand it.

4. Click Allow mixed sleep and choose the Off values for both the battery operation options and the Power Connection option.

Method 8:

Disable Wake Timers
To exit sleep mode in Windows 10, you usually need to press any key or move the mouse slightly. However, you can also create a timer to automatically alert the computer at a specific time.

Note: Execute the powercfg/waketimers command at elevated command prompt to get the list of active alert timers.

You can delete or disable individual alert timers from within the Task Scheduler app from the Advanced Power Settings window as shown below.

1. Go to Edit Power Plan> Power Options> Sleep as shown in Method 7.

2. Double-click "Allow alarm timers" and choose:

Disable the option on the battery
Important alert timer only for connection

3. Now, expand Multimedia Settings.

4. Here, make sure the On battery and Plugged options are set to Allow the computer to sleep when sharing media as shown below.

Method 9:

Reset power settings
Running the Power troubleshooter will fix sleep issues for most users. Fortunately, you can also choose to take the reins yourself and reset all power settings to their default state. Follow these steps to fix the sleep mode not working issue in Windows 10 by resetting the power settings:

1. Go to Edit Power Plan> Change Advanced Power Settings> Power Options as above.

2. Click the "Restore Plan Defaults" button shown in the image below.

3. A pop-up window will appear asking for action confirmation. Click "Yes" to restore the power settings immediately.

Tenth method:

Windows Update
Reports of sleep issues have been many in the past year due to bugs in some versions of Windows especially in May and September 2020. In case your system has not been updated for a long time, head to the following path:

1. Press the Windows + I keys simultaneously to open Windows Settings.

2. Click the Update and Security button from the given boxes.

3. On the Windows Update tab and click the Check for updates button as shown.

4a. Click the Install Now button if there are any updates available and restart the computer.

4b. If no updates are available, you will receive the message that you are up to date, as shown.
