How to Automatically Translate a Spoken Conversation with Your iPhone

Follow this simple guide to automatically translate a conversation using your iPhone, without having to tap the screen after each sentence.

The translation app, Apple's built-in translation tool, has got the new automatic translation feature with iOS 15. This app now allows you to talk to another person using a different language by translating your conversations in real-time. Here's how to enable the feature.

How to enable machine translation

It is important to note that your iPhone has been able to translate audio since iOS 14, so if you are not keen to update to a newer operating system, you can still translate spoken audio in different languages.

All you have to do is go to the conversation mode in the translation app and tap the microphone button before speaking. The same process applies if the person you are talking to wants to translate their statements.

However, it wasn't until iOS 15 appeared for your iPhone to be able to translate your conversations automatically without having to click on the microphone button. This makes conversations more natural, smooth, and convenient.

So in order to take advantage of this new feature, make sure that your iPhone is updated to iOS 15. To find out if your device is running iOS 15, head over to Settings > > about, then check your iPhone software version.

Once this is done, you can now enable automatic translation:

Open the translation app.
Tap the Conversation tab in the bottom navigation bar.
Don't forget to select your language and the language you want to translate into for your conversation.
Click the ellipsis icon (...) and select "Auto Translate".

The app will automatically detect speech and pause to translate conversations in real time.

How to download languages for offline machine translation

There may be cases when the Internet connection is poor. To make sure you can still translate offline conversations, download your favorite languages for offline use on your iPhone:

Go to "Settings" and tap "Translate".

Click Downloaded Languages, choose the language or languages you want, and then click the Download icon next to it.
Make sure On-Device Mode is enabled so that your device automatically translates the detected audio using the downloaded language.

Note that offline translation may not be as accurate as if the translation app were connected to the Internet.

Get ready for wild communication

With Apple's upgraded translation app, you can now translate your conversations without having to interact with the screen. What makes it even more amazing is that you don't even need the internet to work.
