iOS Vulnerability Causes iPhone Screen to Shut Down

A new vulnerability has been detected in iPhones recently, which causes the screen to lock and the phone to crash suddenly when typing a few letters.

Mastodon has revealed a vulnerability that crashes the iPhone, as typing these tags ``::`` specifically in Spotlight search results or in the app library on the iPhone crashes the phone and locks the screen, without the need to type these tags in a specific order.

The website "9to5Mac" confirmed testing the extent of the spread of this vulnerability in iPhones that support different versions of iOS operating systems. In iOS 17, for example, writing these tags causes the interface for managing the home screen on the iPhone to crash and restart the screen again.

In iOS 18 and iOS 18.1 updates, the impact of this vulnerability was somewhat less, as typing these tags would cause the screen to freeze in the “Spotlight Search” interface for a short period of time without crashing completely.

Also, this problem is limited to typing in the “Spotlight” search results on the home screen or in the application library, so this vulnerability does not affect other parts of the iPhone, nor does it pose a security threat to iPhones.
