A feature on your phone that all experts recommend turning off when it's in your pocket
Mobile phone has become an essential tool for everyday life, used for communication, planning, entertainment and even work. There is no doubt that nowadays it would be difficult to imagine a daily routine without it.
But this level of dependency also brings with it some habits that, while they may seem harmless, can affect your device’s performance. One of them, and perhaps the most common, is keeping your WiFi on when you’re away from home.
You may not notice it, but this simple mistake has a bigger impact than you might think, as your mobile phone is constantly searching for wireless networks to connect to. This process, even if you don’t see it, consumes your battery unnecessarily.
The worst part is that it not only affects your device’s battery life, but also exposes you to certain security risks. For example, if your phone automatically connects to a malicious network, you may allow access to your personal data or passwords without you even realizing it.
Experts recommend turning off and disabling WiFi when you don’t need it. In addition to saving battery power, this simple action reduces the possibility of an attacker obtaining sensitive information, such as WiFi networks stored on your mobile phone, which could reveal data about your location.
Likewise, it can be an invitation to so-called fake hotspots. These networks may look like legitimate public networks, but are actually designed to intercept your personal data. From passwords to banking information, anything can be stolen.
Fortunately, managing this feature doesn’t have to be complicated. On both Android and iOS devices, there are solutions that allow you to program WiFi to be turned on and off so you don’t have to constantly worry about disabling it yourself.
On Android: Go to Settings > Network & Internet > WiFi > Network preferences > Turn WiFi on automatically. Disable this option so that WiFi is not activated near known networks. You can also use third-party apps to automate this task.
Taking care of your mobile phone's autonomy and security doesn't require much effort. Once you adjust this small setting, you can improve its performance and protect yourself from potential risks, just turn off WiFi when you are away from home.
