Advantages and features that make you want to switch and use iSIM instead of SIM

iSIM, or embedded SIM, is the latest advancement in the evolution of SIM cards. Unlike traditional SIM cards and eSIMs, iSIM does not require a dedicated slot or chip.

Instead, it is embedded in a tamper-resistant element (TRE) within the device's SoC (system on a chip). This allows for more space savings.

An iSIM works similarly to a traditional SIM card, but is activated wirelessly using a secure protocol. It stores the data needed to connect to your carrier's mobile network and make phone calls.

One of the main advantages of iSIM is its extremely small size, less than one square millimeter, which allows more room for other features in the devices.

Security is another notable feature of iSIM. It is protected in a secure area within the SoC and its security features can be customized as per each manufacturer’s requirements.

A security standard called Tamper Evident Element (TRE) has also been developed to protect iSIMs from physical or virtual attacks.

Additionally, iSIM saves data because it draws the necessary power directly from the SoC without the need for a separate microprocessor.

It is compatible with 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G networks, and allows connection to any carrier. It is also possible to store two different data plans, making it easy to switch between carriers when traveling abroad without the need for a new SIM card.

Satellite-connected iSIMs have also been developed for areas where there is no regular network coverage.

iSIM opens up new possibilities for the Internet of Things, as its small size and low power consumption make it suitable for a wide variety of devices.

However, despite these advantages, the mass adoption of iSIM is still pending.

Even eSIMs have not managed to become the mainstream standard in many countries, including Arab countries, where physical SIM cards are still the most widely used. Therefore, a full transition to this technology will likely take some time.
