Do you want fast Wi-Fi and Internet? Change this channel in the router and you will see a big difference.
Having a good WiFi connection is very important every time we connect more and more mobile devices, this makes it necessary that everything works properly, without problems in speed, stability or signal quality. To make this possible, different factors come into play. One of them is the WiFi channel that we will choose. In this way we can avoid interference with the neighbors' WiFi channels that could compromise the quality of the connection.
Nowadays, it is very common for a community of neighbors to have dozens of Wi-Fi networks at our fingertips. Wi-Fi networks can operate on different frequencies (channels) in such a way as to avoid or at least minimize interference between them, however, many routers use the same frequency by default, and although each one uses a different one, since there are only 13 different channels, there will always be some channels that are more saturated than others, and if we try to transmit through them, we will probably encounter problems like these:
- Low speed.
- Unstable Wi-Fi signal.
- Signal loss and less coverage.
- Disconnect.
- Problems connecting to our network.
Some mid-range/high-end routers have a system that analyzes the electromagnetic spectrum to automatically configure the best channel for our network according to the congestion of each one. Other routers, for example, allow us to see a channel saturation map so that we can choose the one that best suits our needs.
Whatever the case, all routers allow you to manually choose the channel through which the Wi-Fi signal is transmitted, so in this article we will teach you how to manually check the saturation of different Wi-Fi channels and choose the optimal channel number.
For this we will use a free and popular Android application called Wifi Analyzer. We can download it for free from the Google Play Store. Once downloaded, we run it and the first thing we will see will be a graph of all the networks near us, sorted according to their broadcast channel.
Since we are next to our router, the network with the best signal is ours, however, with the naked eye, we can see more than 10 WiFi networks broadcasting at the same time. If we study the graph, we can see that channel 1 is the most congested (so we should avoid it), followed by channel 11 and 6. In my case I looked for a channel through which no neighbor broadcasts, so we chose 4 since there is no congestion above it as shown in the graph .
This application also allows us to see the result of different channels in a way that helps us choose the recommended channel by changing the type of view using the button that looks like an eye at the top.
Once we have determined the best channel for our network, we must change it in the router. Since the settings of each router are different, we cannot explain the exact steps to follow for this, although it is all about entering the settings section, and in the Wi-Fi section, we will see some options related to the channel.
Once we change the channel, we reboot the router, and when we start up again, we can use Wifi Analyzer again to verify that we are indeed working on this new frequency.
In short, we can say that choosing the right channel to connect to a Wi-Fi network is essential to get the best speed and quality of connection, as we will see some improvements in connection speed and stability.
